Battery Wymberly

Battery Wymberly is located on Wormsloe Historic site property on Isle of Hope. It was a heavily constructed battery with large earthen mounds to protect the individual cannons, as well as, personnel located behind the artillery emplacements. The battery has a well defined parapet that can be seen from Diamond Causeway. The guns were in place to protect Isle of Hope and Savannah from Union invasion.

This mound ran parallel to the river behind the artillery emplacements. This was probably constructed to protect the soldiers who may have had some sort of living area (tents, etc) behind the artillery positions .

This is another view of the defensive mound looking at it lengthwise. Notice the large tree growing on the mound.

This large mound would have had an artillery piece between it and another mound on the opposite side. The rationale is if an enemy round explodes near a cannon only one piece of artillery is destroyed.
