During the American Civil War numerous earthworks fortifications were built in the Savannah area.  At the outset of the war a number of artillery batteries were built along the islands, tidal creeks and rivers along the coast to protect the city’s Eastern flank.  In late 1864 it became apparent the threat would come from the West.  A number of batteries and entrenchments were built in preparation for “Sherman’s March to the Sea.”  The Savannah Area Confederate & Union website is an effort to inform the public about our rich history while hopefully raising community awareness of a need for battlefield preservation.
