Gibson Point Battery

Gibson Point Battery once guarded the Northeast side of Whitemarsh Island and defended against a naval approach of Savannah via Richardson and St. Augustine Creeks. The remaining earthworks, which would have contained artillery, resides on a lot in a residential subdivision.

The photographs are of the high mounds that would have shielded each individual artillery piece from being dsmsged by a secondary explosion.

The mounds in these photographs would be represented on the left side of the map above. This large mound has tree growing on its crest. This would have been one of the mounds shielding artillery pieces from enemy fire.

This is another view looking at the length of the mound.

This photograph was taken on top of the mound looking down to where a cannon may have been placed.
