Colonel O.M Poe was one of General Sherman's Engineers he was responsible for a map of the Savannah environs that is amazingly accurate and identifies some of the area forts, batteries, and earthworks.

This handout is a good overview of earthworks fortification.  It also has some good drawings and images of Civil War earthworks.

This links to an excellent glossary of terms related to earthworks is a National Park Service website dealing with the earthworks at Petersburg, VA.
